RESprotect combines the strengths of classical pharmacology with
the mechanistic approach of genomics. The pharmacological approach
is highly relevant from a biological perspective because it monitors
the pharmacological response of the intact system - either cell
or animal - whilst it provides little information regarding the
mechanistic level.
A complementing strategy for drug discovery integrating the molecular
mechanisms into a final read out is the approach of genomics, which
reduces the assay system to its individual molecular components.
Genomics and functional genomics have provided a continuous supply
of new targets. However, the understanding of definitive implications
of genes and proteins involved in the underlying pathophysiology
of disease remains a challenge.
